Does surgical start time or weekend presentation affect clinical outcome for those presenting with neurosurgical pathology? 1).

Presentation on a weekend is commonly associated with higher mortality and a decreased likelihood of receiving invasive procedures.

Weekday after-hours and weekend emergency pediatric neurosurgical procedures are associated with significantly increased 30-day morbidity and mortality risk compared with procedures performed during weekday regular hours 2).

There seems to be a weekend effect for children with ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes. Quality improvement initiatives should examine this phenomenon prospectively 3).
