Compartment syndrome

Compartment syndrome is a condition where excessive pressure builds up within a muscular compartment, causing compression of nerves, blood vessels, and muscle tissues within that compartment. The increase in pressure can result in reduced blood flow, leading to tissue damage and, in severe cases, permanent muscle and nerve damage.

Compartment syndrome can be caused by various factors, including traumatic injuries, burns, crush injuries, prolonged compression, and surgeries. Symptoms include severe pain, swelling, numbness, tingling, and muscle weakness.

If left untreated, compartment syndrome can lead to serious complications, including muscle and nerve damage, infection, and in severe cases, limb amputation. Treatment typically involves surgery to relieve the pressure within the affected compartment, along with pain management and physical therapy to aid in the recovery process. It's crucial to seek immediate medical attention if you suspect you have compartment syndrome to prevent permanent damage.

Compartment syndrome is a condition in which increased pressure within one of the body's compartments results in insufficient blood supply to tissue within that space. … Symptoms of acute compartment syndrome can include severe pain, poor pulses, decreased ability to move, numbness, or a pale color of the affected limb.

Neurosurgeons should include brachial plexus compression due to compartment syndrome in the differential diagnosis of patients with acute upper extremity weakness, particularly when associated with prolonged immobilization and/or substance abuse. Prompt surgical decompression should be performed in these patients if imaging and laboratory data suggest compartment syndrome and resultant neurological deficit 1).
