Foundation for International Education in Neurological Surgery (FIENS)
FIENS, founded in 1969, establishes programs and trains specialty doctors in over 24 countries, including eight with more than one site. FIENS is an entirely volunteer organization. Prior to becoming Chair, Dr. Dempsey was the secretary of FIENS. He is also a member of The Board of Directors.
Formally founded in 1969 as the Foundation for International Education in Neurological Surgery, FIENS sends volunteer neurosurgeons to developing countries to teach neurosurgical techniques and procedures, to help establish neurosurgery residency programs, and to lend their skills in the operating room. Our volunteers have been placed in 22 countries around the world and have helped to treat thousands
FIENS Provides Neurological Surgery Training and Education Worldwide FIENS was founded by a group of leading neurosurgeons in order to address the critical lack of trained neurosurgeons in developing countries.
Since 1969, we have provided hands-on training and education to neurosurgeons around the world. Our volunteer neurosurgeons and personnel spend months on-site, teaching their techniques to local neurosurgeons and setting up neurosurgery residency programs. Our volunteers also provide critical assistance in the operating room.
We have found that working side-by-side with neurosurgeons in the developing world is the best way to impart our knowledge to them. We have also found that passing on our knowledge is the best way to help the developing world help itself. In fact, we look forward to the day when our mission is complete and our assistance is no longer needed.
FIENS Depends on Volunteer Support, Membership, and Donations Since FIENS is an entirely volunteer organization, we can ensure that donations of money and equipment go to directly to the neurosurgery wards and patients most in need. FIENS relies on the generosity of the world's neurosurgical community, as well as corporate and individual Donors and Members who believe in and support what we are doing. You do not need to be a neurosurgeon to be a member of FIENS. Everyone is welcome 1).
