Cerebellar atrophy is the neuroradiological hallmark of many progressive ataxias of childhood. It is a nonspecific, yet useful neuroradiological sign.

Its differentiation from cerebellar hypoplasia can be difficult, especially if progression cannot be proven by repeated MRI.
