Traumatic brain injury following a suicide attempt
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) following a suicide attempt is a serious medical condition that occurs when a person suffers a blow or injury to the head as a result of a self-harm action. The severity of the injury can vary widely, ranging from mild concussions to severe brain damage, depending on the nature of the attempt and the force involved.
Common Causes of TBI in Suicide Attempts
Falls: Falls from a height, such as jumping from a building or a bridge, are common in suicide attempts and can result in severe head injuries. see Fall-Related Traumatic Brain Injury
Gunshot wound: Self-inflicted gunshot wounds to the head are often fatal, but survivors may suffer from devastating TBIs.
Motor Vehicle Crashes: Intentionally crashing a vehicle can result in significant head trauma.
Blunt Trauma: This includes using objects to hit oneself on the head or jumping in front of moving vehicles or trains.
Asphyxiation or Hanging: Though primarily aimed at strangulation, these methods can sometimes cause falls or other trauma to the head if the attempt is interrupted or not immediately fatal.
