The superior articular processes or prezygapophysis project upward from a lower vertebra, and their articular surfaces are directed more or less backward.

Fractures of the superior articular process are rarely seen in clinical practice. Repetitive spinal movements may lead to fractures of the pars interarticularis, resulting in spondylolysis.
