Adult mammalian neural stem cells are unique because of their properties, such as differentiation capacity, self renewal, quiescence, and also because they exist in specific niches, which are the subventricular zone (SVZ) and subgranular zone (SGZ) - the dentate gyrus of the hippocampus.
