Protective Role

The protective role of a factor refers to its ability to reduce the risk of a negative outcome, prevent harm, or mitigate damage.

“Does this help protect against a problem?”

🔍 Characteristics of a Protective Role:

It lowers the chance of something bad happening.

It can act before (preventive) or during (mitigating) a harmful process.

It is often compared to a control group or situation without the protective factor.

Calcium supplementation has a protective role in preventing osteoporosis.

Helmet use has a protective role in reducing head injury severity during accidents.

In spinal surgery, image-guided navigation might have a protective role by reducing screw misplacement.
