Primary bone tumors of the spine surgery

Surgery is often a primary treatment option for primary bone tumors of the spine. The goals of surgery may include complete tumor removal (in the case of benign tumors) or debulking the tumor (removing as much as safely possible) in the case of malignant tumors. The surgeon may also stabilize the spine if the tumor has weakened the vertebrae.


Appropriate initial management is critical; inappropriate surgery prior to definitive treatment can lead to recurrence and may render the patient incurable, as salvage options are often inferior.

Yeung et al. performed a comprehensive search of the PubMed database for articles relevant to primary spine neoplasms and en bloc spine surgery. Institutional review board approval was not needed.

Although Enneking - appropriate en bloc vertebrectomy. can be highly morbid, it often provides the greatest chance for local control and/or patient survival. However, there is growing data to support modern radiotherapy as a feasible and less morbid approach to certain primary neoplasms that historically were considered radioresistant.

Choosing the optimal approach to primary spine tumors is complex. A comprehensive and up-to-date assessment of the evidence is required to guide patient care and to balance the often-competing goals of prolonging life and preserving quality of life 1)

Given the high rate of local recurrence if only intra-lesional excision or incisional biopsy is performed, the best treatment for these lesions is en bloc resection.

Primary bone tumors of the spine are rare entities with a poor prognosis if left untreated. En bloc excision is the preferred surgical approach to minimize the rate of recurrence.


Vertebroplasty or Kyphoplasty: These minimally invasive procedures involve injecting bone cement into the fractured or weakened vertebrae to stabilize the spine and relieve pain. They are typically used to treat certain types of benign tumors or metastatic tumors that have caused vertebral compression fractures.
