Parasellar dermoid cyst
The parasellar dermoid cyst is a intracranial dermoid cyst.
Dermoid tumor in the parasellar region is mostly solid without peritumoral cyst. MRI shows wide-spreading cisternal fatty deposits in the sulci, especially in the interhemispheric fissure, due to spontaneous rupture of the tumors, which are characteristic findings to diagnose that those tumors are epidermoid or dermoid tumors. Comparing with the capsule of dermoid tumor, that of epidermoid tumor is very thin, resulting in difficult total removal of the capsule. Once the tumor capsule is remained, the tumor is possible to recur, and careful follow-up using MRI is necessary 1).
Left parasellar extraaxial lesion 2.2 x 1.9 x 1.5 cm without evidence of contrast uptake.
Slight mass effect on the anterior aspect of the left temporal lobe.
Case reports
A case of ruptured dermoid cyst in the right parasellar cistern imaged by MRI and CT is reported. The disseminated lipid droplets were found scattered throughout the subarachnoid spaces including the prepontine cisterns, in front of the right petrous apex as well as bilaterally in the frontal horns. The density of the lipid droplets was comprised between -80 and -100 HU. The lesions were hyperintense on T1-weighted images and hypointense on T2-weighted images 2).
