Neurotoxoplasmosis

Neurotoxoplasmosis, also known as cerebral toxoplasmosis, is an opportunistic infection caused by the parasite Toxoplasma gondii. It typically affects patients with HIV/AIDS and is the most common cause of cerebral abscess in these patients.

In a small number of people, eye problems may develop. In those with a weak immune system, severe symptoms such as seizures and poor coordination may occur. If infected during pregnancy, a condition known as congenital toxoplasmosis may affect the child.

MRI is of great importance in intensive care, neurology, or neurosurgery units where patients with cerebral toxoplasmosis mimicking an acute cerebrovascular accident or a brain tumor are particularly frequently admitted to 1).
