Motor imagery is a mental process by which an individual rehearses or simulates a given action.

A study in which primary motor cortex activity was imaged with the sub-laminar resolution has found that, while overt motor actions led to activity in both superficial and deep cortical layers, motor imagery engaged only superficial layers 1).
