Inflammation
Edema is the medical term for swelling. It is a general response of the body to injury or inflammation. Edema can be isolated to a small area or affect the entire body.
Swelling is considered one of the five characteristics of inflammation; along with pain, heat, redness, and loss of function.
Inflammation and innate immune system play a central role in cancers, including those affecting the central nervous system (CNS). Currently, classification of neoplasms, especially regarding gliomas, is established on molecular mutations in isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH) genes and the presence of 1p/19q co-deletion.
