​​GABAergic neurons produce gamma-Aminobutyric acid (GABA), which is the main inhibitory neurotransmitter in the mammalian central nervous system (CNS). GABA is primarily synthesized from glutamate, catalyzed by glutamate decarboxylase (GAD), and is present at 30 - 40% of synapses.
