FOEs are safe to use in children and provide valuable information on the mesial temporal lobe structures in the preoperative investigation of pediatric TLE. Patient selection for FOE investigation is, however, essential for a conclusive result 1).

More than 90% of 42 Foramen ovale electrodes (FOE) studies provided sufficient evidence to render treatment decisions. When undertaken with an appropriate hypothesis, FOE investigations are a minimally invasive and efficacious means for evaluating patients with suspected mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE) after an inconclusive noninvasive investigation 2).
