In histopathology, the product of the MUC-1 gene is commonly referred to as epithelial membrane antigen or EMA. Using immunohistochemistry, it can be identified in a wide range of secretory epithelia and their neoplastic equivalents. It can also be used for the identification of mesenchymal tumours, such as synovial sarcoma and ovarian granulosa cell tumours.
