Categorical variable

In statistics, a categorical variable or categorical data is a variable that can take on one of a limited, and usually fixed, number of possible values, assigning each individual or other unit of observation to a particular group or nominal category on the basis of some qualitative property.

Examples of values that might be represented in a categorical variable:

The blood type of a person: A, B, AB or O.

The state that a person lives in.
