The Barnes-Jewish Hospital Neuroscience Center of Excellence contains one the largest neuro-intensive care units in the country and has consistently been ranked among the elite neurosurgery programs in the nation. For 2012-13, U.S. News & World Report placed Barnes-Jewish ninth in the country in neurosurgery and neurology, as it is at the vanguard for both past and future neurological and spine breakthroughs. Washington University neurosurgeon Neill Wright, MD, developed translaminar fixation, a cervical spine surgery, at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in 2003.
