Tonic stimulation
Tonic stimulation provides a consistent stream of pulses at a set frequency, pulse width, and amplitude. Burst stimulation delivers groups of pulses at a lower amplitude and a higher frequency than tonic stimulation. Bursts of pulses are followed by pulse-free periods during which charge balance occurs.
Tonic stimulation, isolated or in combination, remains an important component in spinal cord stimulation, being used by almost half of the patients. Over time, the usage of microburst increased considerably. Whisper and Contour, although battery-consuming, are good salvage options in complex cases 1).
