Sphingosine

Sphingosine (2-amino-4-octadecene-1,3-diol) is an 18-carbon amino alcohol with an unsaturated hydrocarbon chain, which forms a primary part of sphingolipids, a class of cell membrane lipids that include sphingomyelin, an important phospholipid.

Sphingosine acts as a signaling molecule in cells and is involved in a number of biological processes, including cell growth and survival, inflammation, and the regulation of the immune system. It is also a precursor for the synthesis of sphingolipids, a class of lipids found in cell membranes.
