Postnatal hypoxia

Postnatal hypoxia due to respiratory distress syndrome related to hyaline membrane disease, pneumothorax, and/or anemia can deprive the metabolically active GM of oxygen. This ischemia to the endothelial cells lining the capillaries makes them vulnerable to infarction and then disruption.
