Hyperparathyroidism is an increase in parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels in the blood. This occurs either from a disorder within the parathyroid glands (primary hyperparathyroidism) or disorder outside the parathyroid glands (secondary hyperparathyroidism) resulting in them making too much PTH.
