GAP-43
(Growth-Associated Protein 43)
What it is:
A protein associated with axonal growth, neuronal development, and regeneration.
Functions:
Marker of neuronal growth cones (structures that guide axons).
Facilitates axonal sprouting, synapse formation, and nerve regeneration.
Highly expressed during development and after nervous system injuries.
In Spinal Cord Injury (SCI):
GAP-43 is upregulated as part of the endogenous repair attempt.
Higher levels are linked to better regenerative responses.
Therapies enhancing GAP-43 expression are being investigated to promote axon regrowth and neuroplasticity.
