Tribromoethanol is a sedative. It is used to anesthetize laboratory animals, particularly rodents, prior to surgery.

As a solution in tert-amyl alcohol, it has the brand name Avertin.

Tribromoethanol causes rapid and deep anesthesia followed by rapid and full postoperative recovery.
