The insular cortex is circumscribed by the anterior, superior, and inferior periinsular sulci. The identification of superior and inferior periinsular sulci is important from a surgical standpoint since an early exposure at their base is necessary to adequately reach the inferior and superior borders of insular tumors. The convergence of the anterior and superior periinsular sulci is known as the anterior insular point, whereas the posterior insular point is located at the intersection of the superior and inferior periinsular sulci.
