The lumbar discectomy technique may vary depending on the location and severity of the disc herniation. However, in general, the procedure involves the following steps:
o Clip fur at least 15 cm wide of incision
o Permanent marker prior to prep or sterile marker after draping (if needed)
A small skin incision is made in the back at the level of the affected disc.
The surgeon uses a Cobb Spinal Elevator to gently pull the muscles and tissues aside to expose the affected disc and surrounding structures.
The surgeon carefully removes the herniated or damaged portion of the disc using a surgical instrument
Wound closure with sutures or staples, and a sterile bandage is applied.
