Neural cell adhesion molecule L1
Gene
L1CAM
Transmembrane protein member of the L1 protein family, encoded by the L1CAM gene. This protein, of 200-220 kDa, is a neuronal cell adhesion molecule with a strong implication in cell migration, adhesion, neurite outgrowth, myelination and neuronal differentiation.
It also plays a key role in treatment-resistant cancers due to its function. It was firstly identified in 1984 by Melitta Schachner who found the protein in post-mitotic mice neurons.
Mutations in the L1CAM gene are associated with X-linked hydrocephalus, a form of congenital hydrocephalus. This gene is important for neuronal adhesion and migration, and its mutation can disrupt normal brain development.
Tai et al. (2019) identified the cell adhesion molecule L1CAM as integral to the mechanism by which chandelier cells establish subcellular compartment-specific innervation of pyramidal neurons in the mammalian cerebral cortex 1).
