In 2010 a relational database was developed by neurosurgeon Juan Sales-Llopis, to record details of every patient admitted under the care of the neurosurgeons at Hospital General Universitario a tertiary referral hospital in Alicante, Spain.
Its purpose was to provide an accessible data collection for monitoring clinical management and to identify cases for teaching and research.
Admission data from 2010 until 2019 were obtained prospectively from admission and operation registers, discharge summaries written by residents and neurosurgical registrars and operation reports dictated by the operating neurosurgeons, copies of which are kept in the hospital’s Neurosurgery Department. Extra data were supplemented from the hospital’s medical record file. From 2010 onward, data were added to the patient’s discharge from hospital.
The database now comprises an unbroken and confidential record of neurosurgical practice, and contains over x admissions. It has been managed continuously by the first author, thus providing consistency of coding and data integrity over the life of the database.
The database has supplied complications for morbidity/mortality and peer review at monthly departmental meetings.
The database also supplies datasets for research projects run by medical, paramedical and nursing staff, information for hospital administrators to maximise use of limited resources, and audit data for national quality assurance programs,
