The telencephalon refers to the embryonic structure from which the mature [[cerebrum]] develops. 

In mammals, the dorsal telencephalon, or pallium, develops into the [[cerebral cortex]], and the ventral telencephalon, or subpallium, becomes the [[basal ganglia]].
