The superior [[articular process]]es or prezygapophysis project upward from a lower [[vertebra]], and their articular surfaces are directed more or less backward.

[[Fracture]]s of the superior [[articular process]] are rarely seen in clinical practice. Repetitive spinal movements may lead to fractures of the [[pars interarticularis]], resulting in [[spondylolysis]].
