[[Edema]] is the medical term for [[swelling]]. It is a general response of the body to injury or [[inflammation]]. Edema can be isolated to a small area or affect the entire body. 

Swelling is considered one of the five characteristics of inflammation; along with pain, heat, redness, and loss of function.

Inflammation and innate [[immune system]] play a central role in [[cancer]]s, including those affecting the [[central nervous system]] (CNS). Currently, classification of neoplasms, especially regarding [[glioma]]s, is established on molecular mutations in [[isocitrate dehydrogenase]] (IDH) genes and the presence of [[1p/19q co-deletion]].
