In chemistry, a hydroxy or hydroxyl group is a functional group with the chemical formula −OH and composed of one [[oxygen]] [[atom]] covalently bonded to one hydrogen atom. In organic chemistry, alcohols and carboxylic acids contain one or more hydroxy group ---- [[2-Deoxy-D-glucose]] is a [[glucose]] molecule which has the 2-[[hydroxyl group]] replaced by [[hydrogen]], so that it cannot undergo further [[glycolysis]]. As such; it acts to competitively inhibit the production of glucose-6-phosphate from glucose at the phosphoglucoisomerase level (step 2 of glycolysis).
