The carotid [[cistern]], is situated between the [[carotid artery]] and the ipsilateral [[optic nerve]]. It contains:

The internal carotid artery.

The origin of the anterior choroidal artery.
    
The origin of the posterior communicating artery.

A 1- or 2-mm segment of naked [[internal carotid artery]] lies between the investment of the [[carotid cistern]] and the dura of the [[cavernous sinus]]
