====== 1973 ====== [[1972]]-[[1974]] In [[1973]], Epstein identified lateral recess stenosis as another cause of canal narrowing ((Lumbar nerve root compression at the intervertebral foramina caused by arthritis of the posterior facet. Epstein JA, Epstein BS, Lavine LS, et al. http://thejns.org/doi/abs/10.3171/jns.1973.39.3.0362. J Neurosurg. 1973;39:362–369.)). It was not until [[1975]] with the evolution of cross-sectional imaging and 1980's advances in CT and later MRI, that it became apparent that the soft tissue ligaments were a major cause of primary and also secondary stenosis. ---- Kambin ((Kambin P. Percutaneous lumbar diskectomy. JAMA. 1989;262:1776.)) introduced the [[transforaminal]] [[approach]] to [[disc herniation]] in [[1973]]. However, limitations of this technique frustrated surgeons and eventually led to the development of larger “tubular” surgery ((Perez-Cruet MJ, Foley KT, Isaacs RE, et al. Micro[[endoscopic lumbar discectomy]]: technical note. Neurosurgery. 2002;51(5 Suppl):S129–36.)). ---- In [[1973]], Hart and Earle coined the term “[[primitive neuroectodermal tumor]]” ((Hart MN, Earle KM. Primitive neuroectodermal tumors of the brain in children. Cancer. 1978;32:890–97.)) ---- The [[artery of Percheron]] is named after the French neurologist Gérard Percheron, who described it in [[1973]] ((Percheron G. The anatomy of the arterial supply of the human thalamus and its use for the interpretation of the thalamic vascular pathology. Z Neurol. 1973; 205:1–13)). ---- World [[Neurosurgery]] is a bimonthly [[peer review]]ed medical [[journal]] that was established in [[1973]] as [[Surgical Neurology]] before obtaining its current name in [[2010]]. It is published by [[Elsevier]] and is the official journal of the [[World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies]].
