Lumbar puncture is a simple diagnostic procedure with few complications, but if the technique is incorrectly performed, or if it is accompanied by occult congenital malformations such as sacral anterior meningocele, the consequences can be fatal ((Aassouani F, Ennacery Z, Bensalah A, Charifi Y, Mamadou D, El Bouardi N, Haloua M, Lamrani MYA, Ousadden A, Boubbou M, Maaroufi M, Alami B. Lumbar puncture as a cause of tension pneumocephalus, pneumorrachis, and sacral meningocele infection leading to death: An extremely rare case report. Radiol Case Rep. 2022 Sep 17;17(11):4379-4383. doi: 10.1016/j.radcr.2022.08.058. PMID: 36188081; PMCID: PMC9520414.)). ---- A child with [[constipation]] may be treated with laxatives for long periods or misdiagnosed as having Hirschsprung's disease. This can be avoided by often ignored digital rectal examination. The cysts may become secondarily infected leading to meningitis ((Blond MH, Borderon JC, Despert F, Laugier J, Maheut J, Robert M, Sirinlli D. Anterior sacral meningocele associated with meningitis. Pediatr Infect Dis J. 1991 Oct;10(10):783-4. PMID: 1945583.)) and to pyocele. The associated [[tethered cord]] could present with neurological signs ((Hara Y, Shirane R, Yoshimoto T. [Anterior sacral meningocele associated with tethered cord syndrome]. No Shinkei Geka. 1992 Nov;20(11):1217-21. Japanese. PMID: 1448199.)) Rarely, these can be occupied by epidermoid cyst ((Shamoto H, Yoshida Y, Shirane R, Yoshimoto T. Anterior sacral meningocele completely occupied by an epidermoid tumor. Childs Nerv Syst. 1999 Apr;15(4):209-11. doi: 10.1007/s003810050372. PMID: 10361973.)) or could rupture into the rectum. ASM has been reported to be misdiagnosed as ovarian cyst at many occasions ((Erdogmus B, Yazici B, Ozdere BA, Safak AA. Anterior sacral meningocele simulating ovarian cyst. J Clin Ultrasound. 2006 Jun;34(5):244-6. doi: 10.1002/jcu.20198. PMID: 16673368.)). anterior_sacral_meningocele_complications.txt Last modified: 2024/06/07 02:56by 127.0.0.1
